Wheel:Life Announces 2013 Get Out, Enjoy Life Contest Winners

wlifebannerGOEL1The 2013 Get Out, Enjoy Life contest has officially come to a close, after several weeks of contest fun and audience participation this summer!

Our program partner, SPORTS ‘N SPOKES magazine, has shared the event highlights in their September issue and the 2013 GOEL grand prize winner is also featured on the cover of the September magazine.  Below are a few excerpts from the S’NS article that wraps up our annual contest and announces the winner list as well.

SPORTS ‘N SPOKES Spokesclusive: Get Out, Enjoy Life 2013
by Christopher DiVirgilio

For the third consecutive year, you showed us how you enjoy life. From surfing, to hand cycling, or jumping out of a perfectly good airplane, we were right there with you for the heartwarming, and sometimes heart pounding photos. But, at long last, the moment you’ve all be waiting for is finally here. Who won?

Winning first-place, and the September 2013 cover of SPORTS `N SPOKES is Jackson Hays, 7, for his water skiing photo. The Idaho resident was photographed water skiing for the first time during the Ability First Sports Camp in Chico, Calif., which was also another first for him. Winning the cover is one of many accomplishments for the young adventurist having also been the subject of an article in his hometown newspaper. Hays had the opportunity to try out a handful of sports and activities while at camp.

Judging by the ear-to-ear smile on our cover, it’s little doubt skiing is one sport he enjoys. Hays will also receive a brand-new Top End handcycle courtesy of Invacare and the Get Out, Enjoy Life prize pack.

dowdy2ndplaceSecond-place goes to Bryson Dowdy, 6, for his at-bat photo during one of his Phillies Challenger League baseball games. The West Virginia resident has been active in sports since he was 3 and has participated in sports such as football, basketball, soccer and track and field. But, if you couldn’t tell from the expression on his face, baseball is his true passion. And yes, he did hit that ball.

Dowdy’s photo will appear in the Final Frame of the September 2013 issue. He will also receive a new set of Morph Wheels courtesy of Maddak, Inc., a one-year subscription to S`NS and the Get Out, Enjoy Life prize pack.

christinaChristina Martin certainly won the awe factor and third-place for her photo of “Kissed by Bambi.” The Florida resident was captured in this impromptu interaction between deer and human while out checking feeding stations in her hometown of Wauchula.

Martin’s photo will appear in our Spoke of the Week module on the S`NS website and she will receive a $200 gift card courtesy of At Home Medical. She will also receive the Get Out, Enjoy Life prize pack and a complimentary issue of S`NS.

This year, we added a fourth-place prize that we called the Participation Award to acknowledge those people or organizations that submitted the most photos or comments during our contest.

This year’s winner goes to the non-profit Turning Point Gulf Coast in Texas for their many photos showing their members enjoying a variety of outdoor events. From water skiing to kayaking to fishing, this organization is helping people with spinal-cord injuries discover an exciting life of promise and possibilities.

Turning Point is a small 501 (c) non-profit founded in 1979 by Michael “Shorty” Powers to ensure others with spinal-cord injuries would always have a place to continue enjoying outdoor activities.

For their outstanding participation during the 2013 Get Out, Enjoy Life contest, Turning Point Gulf Coast will receive a voucher from AMS Vans good for a one week accessible van rental, complimentary issues of the September 2013 S`NS and the Get Out, Enjoy Life prize pack. For more information on Turning Point, visit them online at:

We also offered daily prize packs for online participants, with more than 40 people winning prizes donated by kind sponsors like Hollister Incorporated, Rollin Wear, UPS, Northeast Passage, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Permobil, the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and Oscar Mike.  If not for their generosity, the Get Out, Enjoy Life contest would not have come to be.
